In 2021, Maoko Project, along with generous donors, raised $3,500 to fund the creation of two benches at clinics outside Harare, Zimbabwe, directly supporting over 5,000 people. This initiative is deeply personal to me, as mental health is a cause close to my heart, especially after the passing of my mother on June 4, 2020. We had often talked about supporting those struggling with depression, and I started this project in her memory.
Friendship Bench Zimbabwe addresses the global shortage of therapists by providing free talk therapy through community-trained Grandmothers (Gogos) who offer Problem Solving Therapy. In 2022, funds were used to provide branded shirts for the Gogos and support their training. Their songs in Shona reflect their dedication to their work and the community.
In 2023, additional funds were raised to expand this project, bringing benches to communities in Mutare and Bulawayo.
We are looking for more ways to collaborate and partner in the future to further this important cause. Thank you to all who have generously supported this project so far.
